New Vietnam Law Shuts Down Independent Think Tank By DPA
Sep 15, 2009

Hanoi - Vietnam's only independent domestic economic think tank has closed because of a new regulation limiting the activities of scientific and technical organizations, the group's head said Tuesday.
A statement on the website of the Institute for Development Studies said it was closing down because of a prime ministerial decision that went into effect Tuesday.
The decision includes a list of 317 topics that scientific and technical organizations are allowed to study and bars them from publishing results bearing on government policies.
'If a scientific or technical organization has opinions commenting on the guidelines or policies of the [Vietnamese Communist] Party or the state,' the decision states, 'it must send them to authorized party or state bodies and is not permitted to publish them under the organization's name.' |

A former chemistry student in Vietnam, 61-year old Le Loc spent $85,700 (1.5 billion Dong) to invent a biodegradable bag all on his own. He had little support. Le Loc said he couldn’t get a loan from the bank, because they didn’t believe that the project would succeed. *So what did he do?* Over the last five years he devoted himself to finding a solution to Vietnam’s plastic bag problem. He mortgaged his house. With the help of technology from the US, he has developed a biodegradable packaging product that will biodegrade after 49-103 days if exposed to direct sunlight, natural bacteria or high humidity. His bags are now available at different localities nationwide and in foreign markets. He is the director of Phuc Le Gia Trade and Service Co. Ltd.. In May , the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment granted Loc’s bags the *“Environment Green Label”* title. He has also passed quality assurance inspection by the Ministry of Science and Technology. |

Barack Obama once gave a glowing endorsement of a book by former domestic terrorist William Ayers and was mentioned by name in the book itself.
Barack Obama, who has consistently downplayed his relationship with William Ayers during his presidential campaign, once gave a glowing endorsement of a book by the former domestic terrorist and was mentioned by name in the book itself.
A blogger unearthed the Dec. 21, 1997, endorsement in the Chicago Tribune and posted photographs of the praise for Ayers' book on Zombietime.com Saturday.
Featured next to a smiling photograph of himself, then-State Senator Obama called Ayers' book, "A Kind and Just Parent: Children of the Juvenile Court," a "searing and timely account of the juvenile court system, and the courageous individuals who rescue hope from despair."
The book, which details life at the Chicago Juvenile Court prison school, mentions Obama by name on page 82 when it describes Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood: |

About 1,000 workers at a Vietnamese company that produces shoes for export have gone on strike for higher wages, a company official said Thursday.
Workers at An Thinh leather shoes company in southern Binh Duong province were in the second day of their strike action, said an official from the company, who refused to give his name and position to AFP.
"They have violated the labour law, which may cause losses for the enterprise. So they might be sacked," he told AFP.
The workers have requested a 10 percent increase in their average monthly salary of about two million dong (111 dollars), he said.
Last year, communist Vietnam was hit by a record 762 strikes, many of them in textile and footwear plants as workers struggled with rising costs. |
